Top Pop Songs To Sing With Your Kids

Singing songs to and with your children is an enjoyable, bonding experience for both you and them. Singing and music have long been shown to raise levels of well-being and contentment, so it's a perfect exercise with which to forge a stronger relationship with your child because you're both happy and unstressed. Not only does singing help in language development in little kids, but it also provides several physical and emotional heath benefits for all involved.

I sang lots of children's songs to our kids when they were little, but now they're older, they tend to lean towards pop music. This is why I've put together a list of pop songs that are perfect for singing to and with your kids. They speak of love, togetherness, happiness and contentment. They are happy songs, songs that bring you together and blend generations. Many of the older songs below are classics. No matter how young or old you are, they'll always mean something to you. Here's my list. Feel free to add your choices in the comment box below.

Top pop songs to sing with your kids

Amarilo - Tony Christie

Download Amarillo in MP3

While this song may not have any real meaning to kids, it's a happy one - a  longing to be with the person we love. It's easy to sing, the repetition is perfect for little kids to catch on, and of course, the sha, la, la, is superb fun to their young ears. My kids and I shout this song to the top of our voices when it plays in the car. They even got me to 'honk, honk' the car horn once to the two beats after 'sha, la, la, la, la la. Perfect!

You Are My Sunshine -  Norman Blake

Download You Are My Sunshine on MP3

What a lovely sentiment to tell your child. They'll remember singing this song with you every time they hear it, and for as long as they live. Chances are, they'll be singing this song to their children too. It's the ideal set of lyrics that perpetuates happiness and contentment. Despite the words about lost love towards the middle of the song, the overall tone is not compromised.

Hakuna Matata - The Lion King

Download Hakuna Matata on MP3.

A wonderful, carefree song for kids. I always enjoy the spoken bits at the very start. Kids love to take turns in saying Pumba's and Timon's parts before the song begins. It's a terribly easy song to follow and sing.

Close to You - The Carpenters

Download Close To You on MP3

This is one of my most favourite pop songs to sing to my children. 'Why do birds suddenly appear, every time you're near...' What perfect sentiments! There is no pretending with this song. It's perfect not only to sing to and with your kids, but for them too. Granted, it's not an easy song to sing, owing to the magnificently talented voice of Karen Carpenter, but who cares about perfect pitch with beautiful lyrics such as these.

Morning Has Broken - Cat Stevens

Download Morning Has Broken on MP3

This is a peaceful song. Perfect for singing when both your and your child need some calm and rest. It will settle you both down and bring you together in harmony and love. It's not as fast paced as some of the others here, but kids love the words and the simplistic tune.

Better Together - Jack Johnson

Download Better Together on MP3

In general, I really love Jack Johnson's lyrics and style. Actually, I can't think of any positive list this song wouldn't be great for. It's splendid for this one because it says things you'd want to say to your kids. Things are always better with them around. For them, life is always better with you there. You may not remember to say it to them every day, but singing a pop song like this with them gets the message through.

Reach for the Stars - S Club7

Download Reach For The Stars on MP3.

'When the world leaves you feeling blue, You can count on me, I'll be there for you.' What a poignant message this song gives to children singing it with their parents! It's encouraging, it's happy and it's meaningful. We can reach our goals knowing that family/friends will be there to give their support.

I'm A Believer - Monkees

Download I'm A Believer on MP3.

A love song with a difference. The repetition in this song is what makes it so attractive to kids. It's easy to learn, sing, and bellow out in the car or in the kitchen. Shrek brought this song back to life and kids have been singing it ever since. This is another fast paced track, and the lyrics shine through to make it one of the best songs kids are singing all these years later.

You Make Me Feel So Young - Frank Sinatra

Download You Make Me Feel So Young on MP3.

I don't know who this song was written for, but it's exactly the kind of sentiments a parent would say to a child. It's relaxing and calm. It tells of the beauty, youth and love a person feel within himself/herself. The kind that is too good not to share with the people you love.

Walking on Sunshine - Katrina and the Waves

Download Walking On Sunshine on MP3.

Another track that spells a carefree world. It's the place where we all want to be when we spend time with our kids. We want life to be wonderful and free from disasters and sickness. We want to feel great, so great we have no choice but to share a sprinkle of the happiness around. Don't be afraid to lift your child, hug your kids, dance with them and show them the child still living inside you. This is the perfect song for that!

So go on! Grab your kid, play one of these pop songs and take them for a spin around the room. Be spontaneous today! If you wish to sample some sing along songs for kids, Amazon has some fantastic ones. The album is called, 100 Singalong Songs for Kids

Thanks, Icy. I've been having a lot of problems posting this. As you can see, there are huge spaces in between. I can't get rid of them at all.

Hi Anne, I love the Lion King Theme song and the S7 picks. You're right - singing is a way for kids to learn as well and the songs are very uplifting. Thanks for posting the wonderful selection. Now if they all download on my pc, that would be perfect. :-)

Oh the Lion King is my little boy's favorite! We always seem to sing some kind of kid songs around our home.

Thanks for the list!

Yes, my kids like that one too. They like the first part with the dialogue between Pumba and Timon.

All of these are great. esp the Carpenters. I just put it on to get junior to sleep. Shame she's no longer with us. Great talent lost.

Hi, Ivan. Welcome to my blog. I too love the Carpenters. My daughter often asks me to sing this song to her. Lately she's been singing it to me. Karen's death is a sad waste of a good life.

Awesome list! I liked those songs very much. Have you heard 'Ain't no mountain high enough' (Gaye Marvin)? I think that song could be on your list too. Thank you for posting this!

Thanks for your visits and comments. Esther, yes, I know that song. I should make another list soon (including that one).

Thankyou so much for taking the time to write this list. Its great to hear of someone who finds sharing music with your children as important as I do! My son is just five months old yet I sing to him all the time, to relax him to sleep, to make him smile or laugh, to calm him when he's upset etc. One of my favourite happy songs that I sing to him and also sang to my much younger brothers when they were small is Three Little Birds by Bob Marley, whenever I or my family hear it, it conjures the most happy memories 😊
